How does deleting work?
UltimateRoll never deletes anything the moment you swipe. Deleting always takes these steps:
- Swiping left, or tapping Trash, adds an item to your Review Pile. The pile is saved on your iPhone, so it waits there even if you close the app.
- Open the Review Pile from the red pill on the dashboard, or from the tray button at the top right while you swipe. It shows how many items are waiting and roughly how much space they take. Tap Keep on anything you want to rescue.
- Tap the red Move to Recently Deleted button at the bottom of the Review Pile. It also shows the item count and total size. iOS asks you once to confirm.
- Confirmed items move to Recently Deleted, under Utilities in the Photos app, where you can recover them for 30 days. If you tap Don't Allow instead, nothing is deleted and your Review Pile stays exactly as it was.
If you use iCloud Photos, items you delete are removed from all of your devices that use iCloud Photos, and you can recover them from Recently Deleted for 30 days.
How do I get back something I deleted?
Anything UltimateRoll moved to Recently Deleted can be recovered for 30 days:
- Open the Photos app. On iOS 26, tap Collections; on iOS 18, swipe up.
- Under Utilities, tap Recently Deleted, then tap View Album and unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
- Tap Select, choose the items you want back, tap the More button (…), then tap Recover and confirm.
Recovered items go straight back into your library. UltimateRoll treats them as kept, so they won't show up in your queues again.
Why hasn't my storage gone down?
Items in Recently Deleted still take up space until they're permanently removed. iOS does that automatically after 30 days.
To free the space right away, open Recently Deleted in the Photos app (see the steps above), tap Select, tap the More button (…), then tap Delete All, or select specific items and tap Delete. This is permanent: those items can't be recovered afterward.
A couple of other things can affect what you see:
- If you use iCloud Photos with Optimize iPhone Storage turned on, many full-size originals are stored only in iCloud. Removing those frees mostly iCloud storage rather than space on your iPhone.
- UltimateRoll's Space Freed total adds up the file sizes of everything you've moved to Recently Deleted, so it can run ahead of what iPhone Storage shows until Recently Deleted is emptied.
What's the difference between Limited Access and Full Access?
- Full Access lets UltimateRoll review your entire photo library: every month and every clutter queue.
- Limited Access lets it see only the photos and videos you choose. The rest of your library stays hidden from the app and untouched. A banner on the dashboard reminds you that access is limited.
To change it:
- To add more photos while keeping Limited Access, tap Select More Photos on the dashboard banner, or in UltimateRoll's Settings (the gear icon).
- To switch between Limited and Full Access, open the Settings app, tap Apps, tap UltimateRoll, tap Photos, and choose Full Access or Limited Access. The Full Access in Settings button on the dashboard banner takes you straight there.
With either option, your photos stay on your iPhone.
How do duplicate and blur detection work?
Both run entirely on your iPhone using Apple's Vision framework. Nothing is uploaded.
- While UltimateRoll is open, it scans your photos in the background, newest first, using small previews already stored on your iPhone. Videos and screenshots aren't scanned, because they have their own queues.
- Duplicates & Similar groups photos that look nearly the same: bursts and retakes taken within a few hours of each other, plus copies of the same image from any date, like a picture you saved twice. Each group shows its best shot first, ranked by Vision's quality score, resolution, and whether the photo is in your Favorites.
- Blurry & Low-Quality uses Vision's image-quality score to find out-of-focus or failed shots, with a sharpness check so crisp documents and text aren't flagged.
These queues are suggestions. Nothing is removed unless you send it to the Review Pile and confirm. You can follow scan progress in UltimateRoll's Settings.
What about photos stored in iCloud?
With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage, some full-size photos and videos are kept only in iCloud.
- The background scan never downloads them. It only uses images already on your iPhone and skips the rest, then scans them later once they're on your iPhone. Settings shows how many photos are waiting.
- The item on screen can download. When you view a photo or video full screen, iOS may download that one item from your iCloud library so you can see it at full quality. A progress indicator appears while it loads. The download goes directly between your iPhone and Apple's iCloud; the developer never receives your photos.
What is Decide Later?
Not sure about something? Swipe up, or tap Later, to set it aside without deciding. It goes into your Decide Later list, which appears as an amber pill on the dashboard. Open it anytime to keep items or send them to the Review Pile.
Decide Later is saved only inside UltimateRoll on your iPhone. It doesn't add anything to Favorites or albums, and it doesn't change anything in your photo library.
What does Re-scan Library do?
In UltimateRoll's Settings (the gear icon), Re-scan Library analyzes every photo again from scratch and rebuilds the Duplicates & Similar and Blurry & Low-Quality queues. UltimateRoll already scans new and edited photos automatically, so you'll rarely need it. It's there if those queues ever look out of date.
A re-scan doesn't change any of your decisions: kept items, your Review Pile, and Decide Later stay as they are. On a large library it can take a while, and it runs while the app is open. Photos stored only in iCloud are still skipped.
What does Reset Kept Progress do?
In Settings, under History, Reset 'Kept' Review Progress marks every item you've kept as unreviewed again, so each month starts over at 0% and you can go through it again.
It doesn't delete anything, and it doesn't affect your Review Pile, your Decide Later list, or your all-time stats like Space Freed. It can't be undone.
Does UltimateRoll upload my photos?
No. UltimateRoll has no servers, accounts, analytics, or ads, and it doesn't send your photos or any other data anywhere. Your decisions and scan results are stored only on your iPhone. For details, read the privacy policy.
Purchases and refunds
UltimateRoll is a one-time purchase, with no subscriptions or in-app purchases. Purchases are handled by Apple, so refund requests go through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
If you delete the app, you can download it again for free from your purchases in the App Store. Deleting the app also erases its on-device data (your Review Pile, Decide Later list, progress, and stats). The photos in your library aren't affected.
